Ah yes, the dreaded activity that has become a chore and you've put it off for at least three months now: organizing your closet. But what if I told you that your life could be a bit less stressful and you could make extra cash in a matter of minutes. Sound interesting?

Let's get started.

1. Change your habits

Now what does this mean regarding organizing your closet? It means that at the end of the day, before cozying up into your bed, you take the time to hang up your clothes and put away your shoes, rather than throwing them in the corner and reassuring yourself that you will put them away tomorrow. Take the estimated three minutes of your time to put away your clothes properly in order to avoid the ample amount of destined clutter. The first step to reducing stress and getting organized is removing clutter. Note: this will more than likely apply to many areas of your life.

2. Get rid of clothes you don't wear

So this step may take a little more time and effort, but it is absolutely necessary to properly organizing your closet. As I've had the opportunity to help ladies get organized, I've noticed that for many of them it's hard to let go of an article of clothing because it holds a special memory in their heart. Now, I understand that you still have that gown you wore to your first prom and will never part ways with it because of the youthful memories it holds dear. BUT, I will be blunt and say that if you're holding onto that top you wore the first day of college (and Lord knows you haven't worn it since) just let it go. If you haven't worn an item in over a year (two years max), chances are that it is just taking up space and could be someone else's new treasured piece. Take the time, however long it may take, and assess each item in your closet (yes, this includes shoes). Out with the old and more room for the new.

3. Organizing what's left

Now what? You've taken out the clothes and shoes that you haven't worn in over a year (I'm so proud of you) and you're left with a surprising amount of space. So, how do you organize what's remaining? This will vary depending on how your mind works with putting outfits together. Personally, I hang all of my dresses together, as well as dress pants and skirts. I have all of the coats separated, followed by blazers and sweaters which are used for layering. For my shirts, I have them color-coded and separated by season. For my shoes, I avoid simply throwing them into the closet; instead, I separate them by boots, heels, flats and sandals. Have I overwhelmed you yet? Give it a try. There is always the option of hiring a professional to create custom storage units for your closet. Locally, the Chattanooga Closet Company will work with you and your budget to create your dream closet. Discover the process that will work and, most importantly, stick with you and your newly organized closet.

4. Vinted

The app that has made me $75 richer from selling the clothes I decided I could part ways with. Seriously, ladies, download this app. You can upload images of your clothes, post a selling price, and voila! Wait for other women to purchase them. (P.S. they even pay for shipping) And I will add, the app is addictive once you sell your first item. If you prefer, you can always donate your old clothes to your neighborhood Goodwill or Salvation Army.

Okay, how are you feeling? Overwhelmed? Inspired? Either way, I want to challenge you to take the first step to organizing your closet. I promise that it will be worth the time and effort to let go of your old clothes, organize what is left and perhaps even take a well-earned shopping trip.
