One of the best parts about Christmas is decorating the oh-so admired Christmas tree. I remember each year growing up just how fun it was to go through boxes upon boxes of ornaments with my family. There were new ones mixed with old, tattered ones; you couldn’t quite tell what they were anymore. We didn’t care, because to us, they were memories we got to place on an evergreen branch for display. As a kid, you’d have that special ornament you were so excited to find in the Christmas box each year and hang. For me, it was my precious mermaid ornament. It was a large one, and Ariel sparkled bright, making it easy to spot on the tree. While decorating, we would always listen to Mariah Carey’s entire Merry Christmas album from the ‘90s. While it was mine and my two older sisters’ job to hang the ornaments, my mom was in charge of garnishing the tree with garland and pearls. Every year, she managed to frill the tree so perfectly; we would always be watching in awe.

Each family’s Christmas tree is a display of memories consisting of where they’ve traveled, crafts made from the children, and gifts given from other loved ones. Every single tree tells a story. Christmas trees are not only an object symbolizing family memories, but symbolizing further celebration of Jesus’ birth.

But wait.

What do you do if you’re a young adult and don’t have a family of your own yet? Or maybe you’re a newlywed with no ornaments of your own to hang? (At least you’ll get the classic: “Our first Christmas” ornament from your in-laws.) You don’t have kids yet, so there goes the idea of hanging the horrifically gorgeous paper plate with their handprint on it. Have no fear, there are ways to make the tree your own with simple decorations! Just because your tree isn’t covered in family memories doesn’t mean it won’t be as memorable. You can decorate your own tree however you want it. That’s pretty nice, right? Own it and make it your (and your roommates) tree while you can. Celebrate the season, and celebrate yourself! Here are a few easy ideas to decorate your tree that I found to be charming, fun, and festive:

2.) Add a Santa hat as the topper

What decorations do you like to use to decorate your Christmas tree with?
