Last year, I chose not to make any New Year's resolutions. I not only got tired of breaking them, but couldn't even remember what I originally promised myself I was going to achieve. Almost everyone breaks his or her resolutions within the first few weeks of the new year. It was my mission to figure out why we break them and to offer a solution that will keep us loyal to our resolutions.

1. Remind yourself

If you have a handful of resolutions, it’s easy to lose track of them over the year. In order to remember them, make a list and place it somewhere you can see it everyday. Your bathroom mirror, cabinet, or on your bedroom dresser are all locations where you won’t miss the reminder. If you want to take it a step farther, make your list look pretty by framing it or using patterned paper.

2. Be practical

If have a list of 30 different resolutions you want to accomplish, you most likely won’t accomplish all, if any. Make a list of no more than ten resolutions that you see important or will better you in the long run.

3. Have the right motives

Wanting to lose 15 to 20 lbs. by summer to look killer in your bathing suit won’t get you anywhere. Instead of wanting to lose weight to look good for others, you need to learn to love the way you look right now as you are, and make a commitment to grow stronger and healthier over the next year. It will help your resolution become more of a lifestyle change and give you a better mindset.

4. Categorize

I encourage you to make two resolution lists: one for your personal life and one for your professional life. Make a list of what you want to accomplish and hang it somewhere in your office to keep you motivated at work.

My resolutions:

1. Grow spiritually in Christ.

  • Have people see less of me and more of Him.

2. Volunteer regularly.

3. Read more often.

4. Take better care of my body.

  • Be stronger through exercise.

  • Eat healthier by choosing a more nourishing diet.

5. Knit more often.

6. Develop better cooking skills.

What are your New Year's resolutions this year?
