Spring Into Volunteerism

Since April is National Volunteer Month and I happen to work for a nonprofit, how could I go without talking about the importance of volunteering and how you can get plugged in right here in Chattanooga? This city is heavy in the nonprofit sector, which leaves plenty of volunteer options.
But why should you volunteer? Most importantly, to give back to the community. I think it’s refreshing to be reminded of how fortunate we are. Very often, you are just as or even more impacted by volunteering as the people you helped.
I will never forget when I volunteered at a homeless shelter; I broke down and cried right after my shift. I wasn’t just empathetic for the homeless, but I was reminded how often I take advantage of my own everyday blessings. The fact that you and me have roofs over our heads, a bed to sleep in, and food to eat are forgotten blessings. We get trapped in busy days and don’t take a minute to smell the roses.
Of course, working at Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) of Greater Chattanooga helps me appreciate life, health, and family. I constantly talk to families who are worried whether or not their child will survive another day. While they stay at RMHC, the staff and volunteers try their best to meet families’ needs and comfort them as much as possible. Their well-being is RMHC’s passion!

If I haven’t sold you already, here are some other reasons why you should consider volunteering:
1.) Learn new skills
You don’t necessarily have to serve in a soup kitchen. You can volunteer your time doing strategic planning, learning how to multitask while working at a food bank (hey…those conveyer belts are fast), or even get involved in administrative work.
2.) Build your resume
Having volunteer experience can certainly make you more appealing to your employer. It makes your persona seem trustworthy and morally sound. According to a study from the Center of Economic and Policy Research, unemployed people who volunteered between 20 to 99 hours during the year were 7% more likely to be hired.
3.) Gives you a sense of purpose
This is a great outlet for those of you who may feel like your job doesn’t give you satisfaction…as though you aren’t making an impact in the world. Many times, giving back can help with that feeling. You might think that it will be too time consuming with the rest of your life events, but, even if you commit to one shift a month, it can change your whole outlook on life for the better.
4.) You make a difference
It’s true! I can’t stress this enough, especially from a non-profit point of view. If nonprofits didn't have volunteers, they couldn't function. You might be thinking, “Well, I’m just one person, so it doesn’t matter.” Think again! You’re the only version of yourself out there. No one else has the same exact skillsets and personality as you.
Where can I get started?
RMHC of Greater Chattanooga is always looking for volunteers. Whether you want to work the front desk, cook meals for families, or do House chores, there’s always something to do! (Unbiased…it really is a great organization.)
Girls, Inc. also is a great one! “You can be involved in homework help, camp, event planning, administrative tasks, IT, and more…” (Who run the world? GIRLS!)
Make A Wish “We match volunteers to positions based on ability, interested and availability. Consider your goals, skills, and purpose when you volunteer for the opportunity that best suits you.” (Not too shabby!)
Blood Assurance Volunteer 30 minutes of your time and make a blood donation! Just one donation can save three lives in our community. (Talk about an impact.)
Where do you like to volunteer and what’s your favorite part? We’d love to know!
