Once upon a time, I had the pleasure of going on an adventure to Lookout Mountain, GA and visiting the quaint studio of the locally made, Louisa Guild Jewelry. Louisa Hurst, the creator behind the gorgeous brand, allowed me to play dress up with many of her beautifully, hand-crafted pieces, which can be found online as well as at a variety of local trunk shows.

When Louisa started her company two and a half years ago, she chose the name "Guild" in honor of her grandmother who gave her the love for jewelry. What makes her jewelry so unique is that she sculpts all of the designs by hand, casts the designs in brass, sterling silver or 14k gold and doesn't plate anything (aka the jewelry won't fade on your skin like that cheap, green ring you always wear). Her designs are mostly inspired by nature, which is understandable considering her upbringing on a farm as well as the beautiful countryside where her studio is located.

In a recent interview, Louisa wrote, "My life is mirrored in my jewelry. It is filled with interesting juxtapositions and beautiful imperfections. I grew up on a farm in North GA where I barely wore shoes all summer but we ate every meal with beautiful heirloom sterling silver flat wear and custom imported china. I love items that have been loved and worn or served a purpose. I like to incorporate those sentiments into my jewelry." And for this, we applaud you, Louisa!
A few of the items I got to play with were her Porcupine Quill Necklace and earrings. (I mean, seriously, does it get more unique than a porcupine?!), along with her gorgeous brass cuffs. You will also find some really cool pieces on her site that are made with deer antlers and various natural stones.

It was a treat to meet Louisa and experience a bit of her work. But what I love most about meeting local entrepreneurs is seeing the excitement and passion behind what they create. It doesn't feel like a "job" to them, although they work much longer than us 8-5'ers, because they are able to make their dreams come to life. I support Louisa and all of you lovely ladies who are making your dreams a reality. Don't give up!
